Basal Cell Carcinoma
Basal cell carcinoma, also called BCC, is the most common type of skin cancer, affecting about a million Americans each and every year. It is typically found on the head or neck, and often resembles open sores or pink or red patches of skin. It can cause permanent damage to the surrounding skin and tissue, but is usually not dangerous. In most cases, the cancerous cells can be removed easily.
For patients with a history of sun damage or multiple skin cancers, medications may be prescribed to reduce the risk of future occurrences.
If your expert dermatologist at Dermatology Consultants detects basal cell carcinoma, typically confirming the diagnosis with a biopsy, he or she will develop a course of treatment for you. Since each patient is different, your treatment may involve Mohs surgery, excisional surgery, radiation or a number of other treatment options.
To receive a skin cancer screening, please contact Dermatology Consultants today to set up an appointment at one of our Atlanta area offices.
