Generations of Dermatology

The following is a letter written to our very own William Dobes, M.D. from one of his patients. The Martin’s have been coming to Dermatology Consultants for many years.

In the summer of 1951 when I was 12 ½ I met your Dad, Dr. Dobes Sr., for the very first time. We were living in Griffin, Georgia, south of Atlanta and I was just entering 8th grade.

Before we left mid-summer on a trip out West for my younger brother’s allergies, I had been treated for a skin rash by Dr. William (Bill) King. On the month-long trip, the skin condition continued worsening and even though I saw several dermatologists along the way, there was no improvement. By the time I reached home in mid-August, two weeks before school started, I looked like I had leprosy. The skin rashes had become open sores and it was in my hair, on my face and ears, and over most of my body. My ears were so cracked where the lobes connect to the sides of the face, I was wondering if my ears could be saved! Dr. King took one look at me and told my parents that he was sending me to Dr. Dobes in the Doctors Building on Peachtree Street in Atlanta. He said that if anyone knew how to diagnose and treat it would be Dr. Dobes.

On the day of the appointment I had no way of knowing that I was going to meet an “angel on earth” doctor that day. When the nurse took my Mother and me into Dr. Dobes office, I remember that he was sitting in a swivel chair in front of his desk. He stood, introduced himself and gently asked me to turn around slowly so he could see my face, neck, arms, etc. He came up closely, looked intently and carefully and then announced that I had one of the worst advanced cases of impetigo that he had ever seen in his years of medical practice. Tears began rolling down my cheeks and I sobbed as I told him that the new school year began in two weeks. He quietly comforted me and told my Mother and me that if I followed his directions carefully, my skin would be almost clear in a week and within two weeks, no one would even know that my skin had been infected. As bad as I looked I had trouble believing his statement because he even told me that my head would not need to be shaved —an enormous fear for an almost teenager!

I remember that “the cure” involved soaking in the bathtub in a certain solution several times a day and I was swathed in white gauze soaked in a solution plus topical ointment. I don’t remember whether I was given oral medication or not. Mother made sure that we followed Dr. Dobes’ directions exactly. Improvement was obvious by the third day and within a week, I felt I had been a part of a miracle. My ears had even healed! I had one more appointment with Dr. Dobes for him to check the healing after about three weeks. I began band practice on time and this “angel doctor” had been correct —In two weeks a person would not have known that I had been covered with open and weeping sores. A few of the larger sores left small scars, but gradually over a period of a couple of months, they became very faint.

I graduated from high school and college, married in 1961 and moved to Richmond, Virginia. Four years later we returned to Atlanta for Hal’s job. Now I had a two year old and a newborn with both in diapers, so my hands were constantly in water, rinsing out diapers. My hands became cracked with bleeding open sores. We were living in the Decatur and Stone Mountain areas, so over the next year I went to three different dermatologists that had been recommended to me. My hands never really became clear of open bleeding sores during that time. They hurt so much that I decided to brave driving in downtown Atlanta traffic, so I checked the phone book to see if Dr. Dobes was still practicing. He was! An appointment with Dr. Dobes would be worth the uneasiness of driving in the “big city”.

It was in the 1966-1967 time frame and your Dad asked me why I had waited so long to see a doctor. When I explained that I had been to three dermatologists over the previous year, he just shook his head and said nothing. Again, his treatment was magic!

Somewhere along the way Dr. Dobes’ son, Dr. William Dobes, Jr., was given the blessing of training with his Dad, because I remember your Dad “teaching” you with “hands on” experience by conversing in medical terms as he diagnosed and treated his patients. Because of that excellent training as an intern, you too, became a superb diagnostician in dermatology—nationally recognized for your expertise—as one of the top dermatologists in the U.S. In 1996 the Summer Olympics was in Atlanta and you were given the honor of heading the dermatology area for the athletes participating in the Olympics.

So the members of the Vegors (my maiden name) and Martin families have all been your patients. When Hal and I retired in 2002, we began making plans to move to the beautiful mountains of Western North Carolina. We built a home with a spectacular mountain view near Brevard, North Carolina and moved permanently to NC in January of 2004. We changed to all local doctors except for our dermatologist. We have driven to Atlanta a couple of times a year over the past nine years for your care. For six years we were approximately 3 hours away from your office, but now that we are in Asheville at a continuing care community for Hal’s 14th year of Parkinson’s, we are 4 hours from Atlanta. We are finding that in our mid-70’s and with the progression of Parkinson’s that we can no longer keep the doctor we love. And so the 62+ years comes to a close as we have our final appointment with you.

We are sad, but at the same time we know that we have been blessed to have been under the expert medical care of both you and your Dad. We hope you will not wait too long to retire, so that you can really relax and enjoy your family—your wife, your children and especially those four precious grandchildren–twin granddaughters, the grandson that is named after you and the newest little grandson.

Thank you for your continued care, concern and expertise over these many years. May God surround you with His love, care and peace.
