Maintain hair that is as strong as you are

July 28, 2023

Hair thinning and hair loss are not painful, however the effects can become very emotionally painful. The experts at Dermatology Consultants are here to help guide you to treatments and home care regimens that really can make a significant difference.

“Why am I losing hair”?

Through evaluation, one of our board certified Dermatologist can help you with an appropriate diagnosis that may include blood work, labs and/or biopsy.

No matter what the reasoning behind your hair loss, there are now treatments available to assist in slowing the process while also encouraging healthier hair growth.

Unfortunately, there is no ONE step miracle approach to addressing hair loss. However, there are combination therapies that do provide significant results that may include topicals, oral medications, in office treatments, or a combination of all three to address the loss from the inside out AND the outside in.

Option One: PRP INJECTIONS

Platelet Rich Plasma Therapy is this three-step medical treatment includes a patient’s blood draw, then it is processed by spinning to separate the platelet rich plasma from the red blood cells using a process referred to as centrifugation. Once separated this growth factor rich serum (liquid gold) is then injected into the scalp by one of our expert injectors. PRP injections are recognized as triggers for promoting natural hair growth, and maintaining it by increasing the blood supply to the hair follicle and increasing the thickness of the hair shaft.

Suggested in a series of 3 - 4 treatments. Ideally spaced 4 - 6 weeks a part with maintenance treatments scheduled out for ongoing support.

Option Two: MICRONEEDLING WITH OR WITHOUT RADIO FREQUENCY

We have been treating patients with microneedling for years. This treatment is many times used in tandem with PRP being applied topically during the treatment or through injections performed by our dermatology providers.

This option has just gotten even better … now we have taken microneedling to a whole new level by incorporating radio frequency. Meet Sylfirm X - The World's 1st FDA-Approved Pulsed Wave and Continuous Wave Radio Frequency Microneedling System. This technology offers our patients the opportunity to now experience significant results with regard to thickening, overall scalp health, while minimizing hair thinning by stimulating fresh blood circulation to the area being treated. This in turn, activates hair follicles that may otherwise lie dormant. As a result, treatment leads to the growth of thicker, healthier hair.

Option Three: HYDRAFACIAL'S KERAVIVE TREATMENT

HydraFacial – Keravive is a deep cleansing, exfoliating treatment that incorporates LED light therapy. It helps to promotes a healthier scalp, and is excellent as a standalone or as maintenance treatment even for our patients that are simply looking for fuller, healthier hair.

Option Four: Home Care

No matter what treatment options you are receiving, creating a strong and consistent at home care regimen is essential to maintain and optimize your results. Suggestions often included are:

Topicals – Our providers may include a scalp polish, treatment shampoo, conditioner and spray on – leave on support products from a few of our favorite lines such as Nutrafol, and ISDIN. Taking your care even one step further, a patient may be introduced to topical prescription medications including, but not limited to Minoxidil.

Oral Medication – A patient may also be prescribed Finasteride. Finasteride is a prescription medication for men experiencing male pattern hair loss, or androgenetic alopecia. Corticosteroid medications may be introduced to treat patients with alopecia areata. These immune system suppressors are developed to counteract the effects of an autoimmune disorder, allowing the hair to grow stronger and healthier. Oral minoxidil is also a prescription medication used for male and female pattern hair loss.

Home Devices – Ongoing care can be achieved by including a device known as Theradome – PRO Laser Helmet.  Theradome lasers are cordless and leave hands free to continue on with your busy schedule. Treatment is comfortable and can be performed in the comfort of your home or office while watching your favorite TV show, reading a book or answering emails. Energy is delivered to the tissue, activating stem cells within the hair follicle, while slowing hair loss and promoting new growth. Suggested treatment is two- twenty -minute laser hair growth treatments per week.

Supplements - Clinically proven oral supplements multi-target the root causes of thinning hair from within. These non-prescriptions, can also be taken to enhance your in-office procedures. We provide top brands like Nutrafol for Men, Nutrafol for Women, ISDIN Hair Density Capsules and Viviscal Pro for visibly thicker, faster-growing hair.

No matter what the reasons or triggers associated with your present condition, Dermatology Consultants is here to listen to your concerns, and to create a comprehensive treatment plan that is as unique as you are.

Hair Loss Awareness Month

August 4, 2022
Hair Loss Awareness Month at Dermatology Consultants Putting your best self forward is something we love helping all patients achieve. A big part of self-confidence is a full head of shiny, healthy hair. However, many patients experience various stages of hair loss due to stress, hormones, aging, and medical conditions. August is Hair Loss Awareness Month and we wanted to let you know your options in combatting hair loss. Social media is abuzz with ads and claims for hair growth serums and supplements making it hard to know what works and where to invest for a healthy head of hair. At Dermatology Consultants, our patients have several options for achieving healthy, beautiful hair that are backed by our esteemed providers. When your scalp and hair are healthy, you feel vibrant, youthful, and beautiful. Read on for how to restore your crowning glory.   Healthy Hair Starts Within As we age, the state of our hair changes along with the body’s normal hormonal balances and can be affected resulting in lackluster locks. You may be experiencing temporary hair loss due to pregnancy, a major life change, or a medication. The first stage of addressing hair concerns should be a visit to your dermatologist. They will perform a comprehensive health intake with blood testing and scalp analysis to rule out any medical issues. You may discover something that you have, such as thyroid issues, low iron, or an autoimmune disease. These blood tests will reveal the next steps to take with your doctor.   Nutrition While a healthy head of hair may be important to you, your body doesn’t agree.  To make sense of this, a little perspective helps– your hair, while nice to have, is not a necessary function of your body’s health. Just like your nails, the hair on your head is not deemed important for overall daily health. If you’re undernourished, your body will put what vitamins and minerals it does receive into necessary functions like blood flow to the heart and vital organs. The hair and nails, at the extremities of the body, receive any leftovers. Ensure your hair gets the nutrition it needs with an antioxidant-rich diet including good fats from salmon, nuts, and avocados, whole grains, and plenty of fruits and vegetables. Your dermatologist can help you find the right treatments to supplement a healthier diet to restore your body to a place of optimum nutrition.   Hair Restoration Treatments Now that you’ve assessed any health concerns and are committed to fine-tuning your diet with good nutrition, it’s time to explore hair restoration treatments. Gone are the days of unsightly hair plugs or unnatural methods. Today’s treatments are advanced and offer great results for most patients.   Supplements for Healthy Hair Nutritional boosters are a great way to round out a healthy diet to ensure you’re getting extra vitamins and minerals.  With so many ads popping up claiming to grow and support hair health, it’s important to read reviews to determine which supplements are best. Thankfully, we’ve done some of the work for you. Nutrafol has been tested and reviewed with positive claims for boosting hair growth, thickness, and vitality. Isdin's Lambdapil line of supplements and topical treatments is also effective. Because healthy hair starts within, supplements are a good choice for improving scalp and hair health.   Light Therapy to Boost Hair Growth LED therapy has made major advancements in all kinds of skin care including boosting hair growth. When you come into our office, your scalp will be assessed You can supplement your in-office treatments with home devices such as the Theradome helmet. This unique home device requires only 20 minutes a day, so you can do LED therapy in privacy while you work or relax at home.   Injections and Microneedling Thin spots at the hairline, temples, or all over? Advanced treatments like platelet-rich plasma (PRP) and microneedling in the scalp prompt healthy reinvigoration of hair follicles. These mini treatments effectively “wake up” cells to produce healthier, thicker, and more dense hair. PRP injections work with your body to jump-start latent hair follicles, growing new hair with a thicker diameter. Your dermatologist will take the platelets from your own blood, so it’s a perfect match that your body can recognize! Using microneedles with growth factor technology, these proteins help develop new hair follicles, contributing to more hair coverage on the head. Both of these in-office procedures stimulate roots to produce proteins and follicular growth. Your dermatologist can determine which is the best option for you.   Scalp Facials Are a Thing! If you love the refreshing, new-skin feel after a Hydrafacial, and are concerned about hair loss or scalp health, we’ve got the answer. Hydrafacial Keravive offers a similar exfoliating and skin awakening facial for the scalp with the infusion of follicle boosting serums. Your scalp will be gently cleansed as dead skin cells are removed and follicles are unclogged. This allows your scalp to thrive and become a healthy environment for hair to grow. The patented Keravive Peptide Complex Solution includes growth factors and skin proteins to encourage healthier, fuller-looking hair.   Conclusion Make Hair Loss Awareness Month a time to invest in options to bring about a healthier scalp and hair. Will Dyeing and Bleaching Contribute to Hair Loss?

August 9, 2017
It should come as no surprise that introducing chemical vehicles designed to augment the color of one’s hair is not ideal for maintaining hair health. But to what extent do products containing peroxide, ammonia, and other popular hair coloring agents affect the structure and vitality of our hair? We have all seen the result of overdyed or overbleached hair; the straw-like consistency that comes from zapping vital nutrients from hair follicles over long periods of time. But what are the long-term effects? Does dyeing and bleaching lead to any prolonged consequences which might contribute to hair loss?

The Answer is Yes and No

The short answer is … kind of. Although dyes and bleaches are known to damage existing hair follicles, and can cause treated hair to become so damaged that it falls out, the effects of these agents are not associated with inhibiting new hair growth. This is due to the inability of these chemicals to penetrate deep into the scalp where the base of the hair follicle resides. This means that, while patients can experience temporary hair loss due to dyes and bleaches, permanent hair loss is not likely. One of the most common ingredients found in hair-lightening products is hydrogen peroxide, favored for its ability to oxidize the melanin responsible for producing hair color. This oxidation weakens the hair cuticle and results in the disruption of key proteins. These factors combine to result in brittle hair that is much more susceptible to breakage. Likewise, other ingredients designed to darken hair – such as phenylenediamine (PPD) – can lead to skin irritation and further hair degradation.

Some Good News

The good news is that hair loss triggered by dyes and bleaching agents is not permanent, and steps can be made to regain hair strength and prevent further hair loss. At Dermatology Consultants, we offer an array of hair products and services meant to not only improve the look and feel of your hair, but also boost hair health and promote new hair growth. Products such as Nutrafol and Omni Hair Restorative Complex are terrific adjuncts to hair therapy treatments and aid in naturally – and safely – restoring hair growth. These products can be used as either stand-alone treatments or in conjunction with other products and services designed specifically for hair rejuvenation. Microneedling with growth factors, topical products, and nutritional supplements also help restore hair growth, and are great options for those who have struggled with other methods for treating hair loss. Although dyes and bleaches damage hair, patients who have used these products have no need to worry about permanent hair loss. However, to improve the health and overall look of hair, prevent future hair loss from occurring, or treat current hair loss caused by other factors, visit Dermatology Consultants for a full hair evaluation.
