Will Dyeing and Bleaching Contribute to Hair Loss?
It should come as no surprise that introducing chemical vehicles designed to augment the color of one’s hair is not ideal for maintaining hair health. But to what extent do products containing peroxide, ammonia, and other popular hair coloring agents affect the structure and vitality of our hair?
We have all seen the result of overdyed or overbleached hair; the straw-like consistency that comes from zapping vital nutrients from hair follicles over long periods of time. But what are the long-term effects? Does dyeing and bleaching lead to any prolonged consequences which might contribute to hair loss?
The Answer is Yes and No
The short answer is … kind of. Although dyes and bleaches are known to damage existing hair follicles, and can cause treated hair to become so damaged that it falls out, the effects of these agents are not associated with inhibiting new hair growth. This is due to the inability of these chemicals to penetrate deep into the scalp where the base of the hair follicle resides. This means that, while patients can experience temporary hair loss due to dyes and bleaches, permanent hair loss is not likely.
One of the most common ingredients found in hair-lightening products is hydrogen peroxide, favored for its ability to oxidize the melanin responsible for producing hair color. This oxidation weakens the hair cuticle and results in the disruption of key proteins. These factors combine to result in brittle hair that is much more susceptible to breakage. Likewise, other ingredients designed to darken hair – such as phenylenediamine (PPD) – can lead to skin irritation and further hair degradation.
