Darker skin has different elasticity and hydration than lighter skin. For this reason, Dermatology Consultants offers facials, chemical peels, microneedling and other treatments that are safe or specifically are formulated for darker skin.
Due to recent advances in technology, we can now offer laser-based hair reduction for all skin types and shades. Pseudofolliculitis Barbae (PFB) is a skin condition characterized by bumps under the surface of the skin, often confused with acne. But the problem actually stems from ingrown hairs. It most often occurs in black and Hispanic people, due to the distinct shape of the hair follicle. Laser hair removal is an effective treatment for this.
When skin is injured, fibrous tissue called scar tissue forms over the wound to repair and protect the injury. In some cases, extra scar tissue grows, forming smooth, hard growths called keloids. People with darker skin tones are more prone to keloids. The most common locations are the earlobes, chest, back, and arms. Below are some of the treatment options we offer.
It is common to see adults of color with multiple small hyperpigmented dots on the face that resemble raised dark brown or black freckles. These are called dermatosis papulosa nigra (DPN). They are often referred to as moles, but in fact are non-cancerous seborrheic keratoses. While the bumps usually pop up on the face and neck, they can also appear on upper back or chest. DPN usually starts during adolescence but the bumps tend to grow bigger and increase in number as you age. Below are some of the treatment options we offer.
Acne can occur in any skin type. But due to its link to hyperpigmentation, it is of greatest concern for people with dark skin. The earlier you seek treatment, the less likely you are to suffer permanent pigmentation scars. Below are some of our preventative and post acne treatment options.
Melasma is a skin condition characterized by brown or blue-gray patches or freckle-like spots and occurs because of overproduction of the cells that make the color of your skin. Fairer-skinned people are less likely to be affected by melasma than those with darker brown skin or those who tan well.
With hyperpigmentation, the skin either produces too much pigment or the pigment is deposited deep within the skin, resulting in dark spots. When color is lost, it’s called hypopigmentation, which results in light-colored patches. Vitiligo causes skin to become depigmented. The loss of color causes large, white patches to appear. Vitiligo occurs in up to 2% of the population but is most noticeable in those with dark skin.
