Aging Gracefully with Help from Dermatology Consultants

September 13, 2021

No matter your age, it’s never too late or too early to start taking care of your skin. Maturing skin can require a different level of care than your skin required in the past.

At Dermatology Consultants, we treat patients of all ages with varying skin conditions. Our board-certified dermatologists, physician assistants and aestheticians are experts in creating skincare and procedural treatment plans and at-home regimens.

In honor of September’s Healthy Aging Month, let’s explore how you can age gracefully through at-home and in-office treatments.

THE NATURAL AGING PROCESS

As you grow older and your skin naturally ages, you might begin to notice various changes. In women, estrogen production begins to decline in the mid to late 40s and continues to drop during menopause.

Over time, middle-aged patients will often experience:

  • Less elasticity due to decreased collagen and elastin production
  • Texture and pigment changes from progressive sun damage
  • Pigment changes caused by hormonal changes

Without treatment, these conditions will continue to progress. When it comes to mature skin, we often recommend a blend of in-office procedures and a good at-home regimen.

TREATING MATURE SKIN: IN THE OFFICE

The in-office procedures we offer at Dermatology Consultants are key to kickstarting the journey to younger-looking skin. They include advanced facials, lasers and energy-based treatments, injectables like neuromodulators and fillers, and noninvasive body sculpting and contouring.

During a consultation, we will evaluate a patient’s current skin condition (with a clinical assessment and our PEAR Skin Analysis tool) and make treatment recommendations based upon the patient’s skin needs and goals.

Facial Treatments

Laser and light procedures – like MOXI or BBL – are an effective way to treat pigmentation, texture, sun damage and wrinkles simultaneously. A standard MOXI treatment takes 15 minutes or less and has very little downtime. This type of treatment may also be used on other areas that show signs of aging, such as the hands and chest.

Microneedling is another treatment we use for anti-aging and skin resurfacing. Microneedling uses small needles to “injure” the skin to stimulate collagen and elastin production as well as deliver radiofrequency (RF) energy. This helps improve skin texture and elasticity, resulting in a more youthful complexion. Our most popular microneedling treatments include SkinPen, Vivace RF and Morpheus8.

Neuromodulators (Botox, Dysport and Xeomin) and fillers (Juvéderm, Restylane, RHA and Radiesse) are used to lessen the appearance of wrinkles and restore volume. Neuromodulators work by partially relaxing facial muscles to decrease current fine lines and wrinkles and prevent new ones from forming. At Dermatology Consultants, we use fillers to restore lost volume in aging patients for a smoother complexion, as well as plump lips, treat hollow tear troughs and add volume to chins.

For patients who desire facial sculpting – without undergoing a surgical procedure like a facelift – energy-based treatments are ideal. Treatments such as EVOKE and AGNES RF are ground-breaking facial remodeling procedures that tighten skin, stimulate collagen production, minimize fat and contour the face for a more youthful appearance. These treatments are noninvasive and patients can resume normal activities afterward.

Body Treatments

Just like our faces, our bodies require anti-aging treatments, too. Body sculpting procedures – such as EMSCULPT and CoolSculpting – allow patients to noninvasively target and treat problem areas of their bodies. CoolSculpting is used for reducing fat, while EMSCULPT focuses on building muscle.

EMTONE is another treatment we encourage our aging patients to consider. This treatment works by increasing the skin laxity of the buttocks, thighs and knees, resulting in new collagen production and skin tightening.

For patients who struggle with cellulite, we love to recommend QWO. QWO is a revolutionary, non-surgical treatment that’s used to treat moderate to severe cellulite in the buttocks and thighs. It’s the only FDA-approved injectable treatment for cellulite on the market and patients love the long-lasting, natural results.

All of our body treatments can help create a more sculpted, toned physique at any age.

TREATING MATURE SKIN: AT HOME

While in-office treatments are crucial for skin improvements, it’s also important to maintain a good skincare routine at home. Every patient is different – and for that reason, anti-aging skincare regimens vary. But for mature skin, we often recommend a variation of the following types of products:

Growth Factors

We love Biopelle’s Tensage Intensive Serum 50 and Tensage Stem Cell Cream, as well as Zo Skin Health’s Wrinkle+Texture Repair and the Daily Power Defense.

Hyaluronic Acid Products

For skin plumping and hydration, try Revision Skincare’s Hydrating Serum or ISDIN’s Hyaluronic Concentrate.

Collagen and Elastin Builders

Alastin’s Restorative Skin Complex and Skin Nectar are fantastic for combatting all signs of aging, and is a great addition to having body sculpting treatments.

Estrogen Repletion Products

Emepelle Night Cream and Serum are ideal for women with estrogen-deficient skin.

Retinoids

Retinoids or retinols are an essential part of every skincare routine (we especially like the ones from Revision, ISDIN and SkinBetter Science).

Antioxidants

Antioxidants (including Vitamin C) treat your current skin while protecting it from future damage, too. Our favorites are Revision’s C+ Correcting Serum 30% and ISDIN’s Melatonik Night Serum.

Polypeptides

These products – such as Revision’s Revox Line Relaxer – work well on their own or in conjunction with neuromodulator treatments.
